Bernadette Ruby Behmlander loved fashion and jewelry. This 50-year-old woman loved to dress in country western clothes and enjoyed wearing lots of jewelry.
In 1997, Bernadette was divorced, living alone in Battle Creek, Michigan, and unemployed.
She had an amicable relationship with her ex, and he often helped her out. In fact, that’s what happened on October 1, 1997, when he and Bernadette had their regular weekly phone call. She told him that she needed some home repairs done, and didn’t have the money.
He told her he would help her out.
The following week he called her for their regular phone call. She didn’t answer. He continued to try and reach her and finally realized he better go over and check on her.
He didn’t find Bernadette however, but he did find an odd scene at the house. Food was left on the stove, the check he wrote her was on the countertop and all of her belongings were left in the home.
There was no sign of Bernadette. At first, he thought she might return home, but finally, he realized he needed to call the authorities and report her missing.
Bernadette had disappeared.
