Dr. Carol Poe was a beloved physician in the Greenville County, South Carolina area. She was very active, specifically enjoying swimming, running and cycling, even competing in marathon races.
After working 30 years as a physician, Dr. Poe eventually retired from her job with the South Carolina Upstate EMS, although she remained active and enjoyed her volunteer work through Meals on Wheels. Her retirement was well deserved, although the decision to retire had been partially forced upon her due to her Parkinson’s Disease diagnosis.
Dr. Poe wasn’t going to let that slow her down.
Western South Carolina is known for beautiful hiking trails, scenic drives, and all things outdoors. The perfect place for someone like Dr. Poe to live and explore.
That particular part of the country, however, would soon experience something they have never before seen.
On September 28, 2024, after spending more than a day traveling across the land from Florida, Hurricane Helene swept through Tennessee, North Carolina, and parts of South Carolina with a vengeance. The damage was unlike anything that part of the country had seen before, especially from a hurricane.
